A plexiglass board (acrylic glass) is one of the most useful tools in watercolor painting, especially for the wet-on-wet technique.

Here are the main advantages:

  • Natural adhesion: Wet watercolor paper sticks to the smooth plexiglass surface on its own through surface tension, without needing tape or clips.
  • Slower drying time: The plastic sheet does not absorb moisture, keeping the back of the paper wet longer. This gives you more time to work with wet techniques.
  • Perfect stretching: As the paper dries, it flattens out completely and evenly without buckling or warping.
  • Easy to clean: Paint residue can be wiped off in seconds with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • Waterproof: Unlike wooden drawing boards, plexiglass will not warp, absorb water, or degrade from moisture over time.
  • Lightweight and portable: It is very light, making it easy to tilt or turn the board while painting to control the flow of water and pigments.
  • Transparency: You can place a sketch or reference photo underneath the board to trace it onto your paper using a light source.

How to Use It:

  1. Soak your watercolor paper completely in water for a few minutes.
  2. Place the wet paper directly onto the plexiglass board.
  3. Smooth out any air bubbles and excess water using a sponge or a rubber roller.
  4. Paint your piece while the paper remains perfectly flat and fixed in place.
